The wait is finally over! After years of rumors and speculation, the Nintendo Switch 2 has officially arrived, and it's everything we hoped for and more. Released on June 5, 2025, this new hybrid console is not just a modest upgrade, but a true leap forward, bringing a host of technical and social improvements that will redefine your gaming experience.

A Powerful New Machine

At first glance, the Nintendo Switch 2 looks familiar, maintaining the beloved hybrid design of its predecessor. However, the improvements under the hood are substantial. The new console features a larger 7.9-inch LCD screen with a 1080p resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate, a significant step up from the original's 720p display. When docked, the Switch 2 can output games in stunning 4K resolution at 60 Hz, thanks to its custom NVIDIA Ampere GPU. This power boost means games look sharper, run smoother, and are more immersive than ever before.

The new Joy-Con 2 controllers have also been redesigned. They attach magnetically to the console, and have bigger buttons and a new "C" button that enables the new GameChat feature. This allows for in-game communication, screen sharing, and even webcam use, a long-requested feature that finally brings the Switch into the modern era of online gaming. The controllers also feature mouse control, which is being utilized in a number of new games.

A Launch Lineup to Get Excited About

A console is only as good as its games, and the Switch 2's launch lineup does not disappoint. Nintendo's flagship launch title is Mario Kart World, a new entry in the series that introduces an open-world racing concept. Other new exclusives include the highly anticipated Donkey Kong Bananza, a 3D platformer from the creators of Super Mario Odyssey, and the unique wheelchair basketball game, Drag x Drive.

But it's not just about new games. Many of your favorite Nintendo Switch titles are getting Switch 2 Edition upgrades, often for a small fee. This includes games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which now feature HDR and enhanced graphics. The console is also backward compatible with most original Switch game cards, though some may not work. For fans of classic gaming, the Nintendo Switch Online subscription now includes access to a library of emulated GameCube games.

Is it Worth the Upgrade?

With a price tag of $449.99 USD, the Nintendo Switch 2 is a bit more expensive than its predecessor, and new games are also priced higher. However, the console has sold over 5.8 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2025, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo console ever. The technical improvements, coupled with the enhanced social features and a strong launch library, make it a worthy successor that truly takes the Switch experience to the next level.
